The rule was in place long before Brexit and the UK was one of the countries that was party to the agreement. When they made the decision to vote leave (and they keep telling us they knew what they were voting for) they did so with full knowledge that this was the rule, it has not sprung up since 2016. You can apply for visas to stay longer if you wish and if you sell your property, logically, the person buying it will be paying the same standing charges, so Portugal will not lose out. I do feel very sorry for those that voted remain, and are going to suffer because others voted to make life more difficult for UK nationals with holiday homes, but I see no reason for any EU country to bend the rules because a member decided it wanted out. Leave voters will just have to take consolation in enjoying all the other benefits that Brexit has apparently brought them…
