Autonomy and active aging are the keywords of this new concept that is totally dedicated to residents over 55 years old.

In this development, residents can expect a strong sense of community, a feeling of safety and to be able to engage in a lot of fun activities for a relaxed and happy lifestyle.

To promote wellness activities and a healthy lifestyle, Aldeia Azul, which in English means blue village, “offers several amenities, such as Pool, Sauna, fun 9-hole mini-golf, a yoga spot, a tennis court, a football pitch with real grass, a bowls green and much more,” explained the CEO, Rui Viegas.

Despite being based in the countryside of Praia da Luz, in Lagos County, allowing residents to enjoy nature and to breathe fresh air, Aldeia Azul is also close to the beach and only five minutes from the city of Lagos. It’s also near to the A22 highway that quickly takes you to Faro airport, as well as the rest of the entire Algarve.

Why turn a resort into a lovely village for retirees?

Everyone loves the Algarve, which is why many families move here to spend their lives in this sunny region. However, the need for special care when advancing in age may lead some people to return to their homeland, leaving this southern paradise behind.

“Years ago, an 80-year-old couple told me they would return to the UK because they needed more care in this phase of their life,” said Rui Viegas. This situation led him to think of how useful it would be to provide a service totally aimed at these people in the Algarve.

“We have a perfect space in Aldeia Azul to provide a high quality service to retirees”. That's how the idea of creating a new and totally different space to promote active aging was born.

Additionally, this new business will allow for the creation of more jobs throughout the year. “Combating seasonality in the Algarve is important. We believe that the Algarve is a destination with potential throughout the year and not just in the summer. This new project will contribute to that goal”, said Rui Viegas.

Accommodation options and comfort

At Aldeia Azul, the shades of blue stand out in the 30 fully equipped houses with charming, modern and cosy decoration, guaranteeing everything you need to live in comfort.

“We offer independent accommodation for seniors in which we have ground floor villas with good access, with private terraces with access to petanque, mini-golf, gardens, a gym, yoga spot, restaurant and much more. Some of the properties have an extra bedroom”, he said.

In addition to these lovely and traditional properties, which are available for short and long term rentals and also for permanent residence, it’s when you go outside that the eyes start to sparkle. All houses have lovely terraces with sun, shade, table and chairs so people can appreciate time outside.

In this village, residents can simply wake up in the morning, opening the window and feeling ready for a new day, worrying about anything but deciding what the plans are for that day.

Suitable Meals

Starting the day with breakfast, having lunch, tea time or dinner on-site at the Aldeia Azul restaurant is possible for anyone, even for those on specific diets.

“We provide seasonal, healthy and tasty ingredients to prepare the restaurant's menu. In addition, we must not forget that there may be residents with special nutritional needs. First, we listen to the needs of each customer and then we adapt”, said the CEO.

However, "although we consider eating on-site important, even to promote socialisation among residents, the restaurant is just one more option, as all houses have fitted kitchens and a shared barbecue, and meals can be delivered at home"
