The programme for the celebrations to mark the 650th anniversary of the Luso-British Alliance has been presented in Braga by Ricardo Rio, mayor of the Municipality, who was accompanied by Katharine Felton, Political Adviser at the British Embassy in Lisbon and Maria João Rodrigues de Araujo, President of Portugal-UK 650.

The celebration of the 650th anniversary of the oldest and most enduring diplomatic alliance in the world, which remains in force, is held in Braga as the city is the capital of the district where the first treaty between England and Portugal was signed on July 10, 1372, known by the Treaty of Tagilde, which led to the Treaty of Alliance, signed a year later (June 16, 1373), in London, at St. Paul's Cathedral.

Pride

For Ricardo Rio, mayor of Braga, the City's association with these celebrations “is a source of pride and great satisfaction to be one of the epicenters of the celebration of a historical relationship of our country that has produced many fruits in different areas. In this set of initiatives, the cultural dimensions are particularly valued, demonstrating that Culture is always a good door for the relationship between people and different nations”.

Katharine Felton, Political Adviser at the British Embassy in Lisbon, in turn, said that “it is an honour to join such prestigious partners in the beautiful city of Braga to launch the celebrations of 650 years of bilateral relationship and friendship between Portuguese and British people, which we wish to continue to develop into in the future. We are very excited about the wide range of initiatives, which we believe, in Portugal and the United Kingdom, mark in the most distinct way the true essence of this old alliance between our two countries.”
