“Two months of absolute majority and the Government barely presents its program, and for the first time in many years, it abandons the objective of guaranteeing all people in Portugal access to a family doctor”, said Catarina Martins.

In her opinion, “abandoning the objective of total coverage of the territory with family doctors for the entire population is to abandon the idea of a National Health Service [SNS]”.

“It is possible, if there is a will, until the end of the legislature, to guarantee that the entire population has a family doctor and that it has a family health team, because the SNS is training enough people to do so. It remains to be seen whether there is a political decision to give them the conditions to work and thus guarantee access to health for the entire population”.
