“These measures are structural, they are not extraordinary”, underlined the minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, in a press conference at the end of the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

According to Ana Mendes Godinho, the reinforcement of the family allowance, which will cover around 400,000 children in the 1st and 2nd levels, will come into force in September and will be implemented in a phased manner, retroactive to July and completed in 2023.

In addition to this amount, children and young people in extreme poverty will also receive an additional benefit of €70 per month this year and €100 per month from 2023. The measure will cover around 123,000 children.

The Council of Ministers also approved an amendment to the levels of family allowances with the aim of “adapting them to the evolution of the minimum wage”, said Ana Mendes Godinho.
