The first session of this trial in the city of Porto is scheduled for this morning, continuing in the afternoon, with the case to go directly to trial.

The main defendant, Anas Kataya, 21, is accused of murder and aggravated assault, a crime for which a second defendant, Jean Jelali, also of French nationality, is also charged.

The victim, Paulo Correia, was a basketball player for Guifões Sport Clube, in the municipality of Matosinhos, Porto district.

The indictment of the Public Prosecutor (MP) says that in the early hours of 10 October 2021, near a nightclub, in the Passos Manuel area, in downtown Porto, "while waiting to enter the place, there was an exchange of words between a group of Portuguese citizens, where the three offenders were, and three women of French nationality".

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, "the three women momentarily moved away from the place, going to meet the two defendants, also French, who, knowing of the disagreement, came towards the group [where the student Paulo Correia was], with the sole purpose of assaulting him".

"One of the defendants [Anas Kataya], on reaching one of the offended parties, punched him in the face and head and then went after the victim, punching him very violently in the head", says the indictment, underlining that the victim staggered towards a car parked there and crashed into it, "falling to the ground and lying there".

The other accused [Jean Jelali], according to the public prosecutor, "went towards the third victim and punched him, making him fall to the ground, after which he kicked him in the chest".

In the indictment, the Public Prosecutor's Office defends the application of an accessory penalty of deportation from national territory to both defendants.
