Roughly half of all public
libraries in Romania have closed between 1990 and 2022 according to a report by
Digi24.

There were 16,665 libraries
in Romania in 990 but this number as now fallen to 8,207. A 2016
Eurostat survey found that only 6.2 percent of Romanians regularly
read books.
