The strike was called by seven union organisations, including the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) and the National Federation of Education (FNE), which demand the valorisation of the teaching career, the fight against precariousness, and the need to promote the rejuvenation of the sector.

The strike coincides with the visit of the Minister of Education, João Costa, to parliament to be heard within the scope of the discussion in the specialty of the OE2023, which provides for €6.9 billion for basic and secondary education and school administration.

For union structures that represent teachers, this amount is, however, insufficient and represents what they consider the sector's underfunding. On the other hand, they also consider that the OE2023 leaves several problems unanswered.

In addition to the strike, Fenprof called for a meeting for the same day in front of the Assembly of the Republic from 15:00, one hour before the start of João Costa's hearing.

FNE will promote initiatives with union leaders in several schools in the country, during the morning.
