The many events and ever-growing ‘Pop-Up’ shops along the western Algarve. They have some busy long-term team members, Anita running the pop-ups and Zélia with her ever-increasing cat colonies. The ladies at the busy charity shops are always cheerful and on hand to help. Like APAA’s motto, ‘here to help’. “People do sometimes forget, that we, as a charity are at the bottom end of the chain.”

Jenny is not worried. “We have to pick up the bits and pieces no one else wants.” Like dogs and cats? “The abandoned animals, do not go away, they do not disappear. They are growing in numbers. Despite SNiP, and the shelters along the Algarve, we still have to get in as quickly as possible. It’s not easy!” Jenny knows first-hand as working on the job, president, that helping hands are always needed.

Spaying and Neutering Programme, is promoted to raise attention to the need of sterilisation of animals, and to reduce their numbers on the street and in the wild. Feral cats and abandoned dogs take up time, energy and money. “Our community is, thankfully, aware of our work.” But no harm in reminding them from time-to-time? “Indeed, we have newcomers to our sunny shores and we try and encourage everyone to participate, in some way or another.” Like ‘Pop-Up’ shops?

Diary marker: Thursday 6th April, 12-3pm, ‘O Tasco’ Senhora do Verde, north of Portimão. A delightful countryside spot where the cares and woes of city life can be left behind. Along with the dogs and cats. Oops! The venues for APAA’s ‘Pop-Up’ shops are chosen for the situation, atmosphere, cold drinks, coffee, snacks or lunches. A place where anyone can pop-in and see what is for sale. Bring something along, if you want to.

Friends old and new, will congregate to swap local gossip, news and take part in APAA’s campaigning, even if, it is just to buy a gift for a friend, or something for the house or garden, or all three! Apart from books, ornaments and beautiful paintings, there are clocks, jewellery, kitchen utensils, golfing sets. Exercise bikes. The girls at ‘O Tasco’ are always friendly and ready to take your order.
