DP World Tour Player and Faro native Ricardo Santos has been handpicked as Event Ambassador and will conduct a golf clinic for all participants.

“It is a pleasure to be associated with this event and to be able to support junior golf”, he says.

The Grand Young Talent Golf Tournament will feature different modalities based on age groups, including stroke play for U18 and U14, and Stableford for U10. General and category prizes will be awarded in accordance with game regulations, with both gross and net score formats used.

By all accounts, junior golf in Portugal has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, with various organisations and programmes committed to promoting and supporting the sport at national and regional levels. Golf is renowned for the multitude of benefits it offers children of all ages, from social to physical and mental.

Event ambassador Ricardo, who Wyndham Grand Algarve is sponsoring on this year´s DP World Tour, also started golfing at a young age himself, turning pro in his 20s, agrees: “Golf is a great sport for children for many reasons, it helps develop concentration, focus and resilience, it is practiced outdoors and with others so it contributes to the development of social skills but also it teaches you about integrity and honesty”, he says, adding: “Junior tournaments are always a great opportunity for kids to play in a competitive environment with others and keep them motivated and eager to develop and improve their game”.

Ricardo recorded his first Challenge Tour victory in 2011, which took him to the top of the tour rankings, becoming the first Portuguese-born golfer to win at this level. A year later, he won the European Tour on home soil at the Madeira Islands Open. Last year, he won the Optilink Tour Championship, becoming the first Portuguese national to win a PT Tour final.

Through his ambassadorial role and golf clinic at The Grand Young Talent Golf Tournament, Santos hopes to inspire and support the young golfers as they compete – and long after. He encourages all aspiring young golfers to “follow their dreams and always believe, work very hard and be resilient”.
