According to a report by idealista it was in Braga, Funchal, Vila Real de Santo António, Amadora and Matosinhos where demand increased the most – in these five municipalities the number of visits to houses available for rent at idealista more than tripled.
In the final stretch of 2022, North Americans focused on looking for a house to rent in Lisbon, Porto and Cascais, corresponding to 28%, 12.2% and 8.4% of total visits in that period, respectively - In addition to these, Tavira, Braga and Loulé are also among those with the highest number of visits by North Americans in December. The municipalities that least attracted Americans to rent a house were São João da Pesqueira (District of Viseu), Arronches (Portalegre) and Penedono (Viseu).
In the rental market, the geographic focus of families coming from the US also changes depending on the type of home they are looking for. The greatest demand for villas for rent was registered in Cascais, Porto, Loulé, Tavira and Albufeira. Rustic houses for rent are most searched for in Tavira, Nazaré, Silves, Sintra and Caminha. With regard to rooms for rent, demand from North Americans is more significant in Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, Coimbra and Almada, data from idealista also reveals.
In October 2022, a new law came into force in Portugal that allows foreigners to work remotely from our country for one year. From then until January 2023, around 200 visas have already been issued for digital nomads. And US citizens are among the most likely to apply for these temporary residency permits for remote workers.

Does Portugal really want to be a prime living destination from one of the world's worst countries? You can argue these are people trying to escape the consumerist, libertarian nightmare that the USA is, but if they bring even 5% of the greedy, atavistic attitude that their home country revels in I don't think they should be welcomed.

Please. Do not just quote a percentage - please include the actual quantity. A percentage can be misleading, since it depends on the original number at the quoted percentage. 154% over a two year period - is that on a 2020 number of 1,000 up to 2,371.6? And these are not actual immigrants, this is the number of inquiries on Idealista which has no correlation to the actual number of those who immigrated to Portugal. This type of headline just serves to continue the resentment and bashing of Americans - which remain a very small percentage of the new immigrants to Portugal and a very small percentage of immigrants living in Portugal. The largest percentage in both categories is Brazilian. For English speakers, it is British. And all of the colonies, present and past, of Portugal. Most Americans retiring in Portugal are not millionaires. We are living on our pension, which is typically Social Security benefits, and we contributed 50% of those taxes used to fund this program. And we pay Portuguese tax on that income, unlike other pensions that are 100% funded by the US or State Governments such as military, the education system, police and firefighters, city, county and state employees, etc. Retired residents of Portugal spend all of their income here instead of in their original home country. We are required to have private health insurance and it is not these residents who are over running the National Health Service. That is caused by a severe shortage of professional medical staff and an increase in the aging population of Portuguese natives together with the much smaller immigrant population. The young professionals from Portugal often leave to earn a better wage in order to afford basic needs.

As usual, no mention of the comparable statistics for the Azores or Madeira. It should be a matter of routine that you include information for both in all of your reports dealing with such information instead of callously excluding and thus ignoring many thousands of potential readers/donors. I know that there are a number of real estate developments in Portugal that are desperately waiting for US immigrants with some money to spend. I recently had a look at Royal Obidos and Bom Successo near Obidos and they would really need some US money.
