Remote working is now an integral part of the business world, and when you can choose to work from anywhere then why wouldn’t you choose Portugal?

To encourage digital nomads to Portugal, and to make the process of moving to the country while working remotely much easier, Portugal has launched a new digital nomad visa.

This visa is granted to people who earn four times the minimum wage in Portugal, approximately $2,750 a month, and allows the holder to live and work in Portugal for up to one year or alternatively to then apply for residency and to stay for longer. If you go for the residency option, then this lasts for five years and can then be renewed for a further five years – after that then you can apply to be a permanent resident in Portugal or a Portuguese citizen. As a Portuguese citizen you then have the right to live, work and study in any country in the European Union, making this a very attractive option for many people looking to have freedom of movement within the Union.

If the thought of living in Portugal while earning US wages sounds appealing, then you can get the ball rolling with an application for a digital nomad visa by visiting your nearest Portuguese Consulate who will be able to provide more information on the entire process. You will need to be able to provide proof of income for the past three months, a contract of work or proof of self-employment and tax residency documents - but don’t worry, this really is a simple process!

One of the other great benefits of the digital nomad visa is that once you have your documents then you can move throughout the Schengen Area without the need for any other visas, a great bonus if you intend to travel around Europe while basing yourself in Portugal for your remote work.

Whether you are looking for a temporary stay in Portugal or aim to stay for longer, the digital nomad visa is a great starting point for your time in Portugal.
