In a press conference after the 3-0 victory against Santa Clara, in the 34th and final round of the Liga Portugal, the coach highlighted the dedication of everyone who worked with him.

“I am feeling a mixture of great happiness and great pride. It was a long journey and we needed a lot of dedication to reach our goal, which was to be champion again. We knew how much the Benfica fans wanted a successful season. It was a great motivation for us and it was a tough fight. We needed 87 points and to go to the last round in order to be champions. I am very happy for my players and staff, and for how hard they worked for this because they tried everything to be the best team in Portugal”, said Schmidt.

The first German coach to win a league title in Portugal admitted there was "a lot of pressure" to win the game against Santa Clara and praised the players' "winning attitude".

“We always played good football, attacking football. The players always tried to entertain the fans, but with the aim of winning trophies. In the end, we got our reward", said Schmidt.

Benfica have been crowned Portuguese football champions for the 38th time, after beating Santa Clara, 3-0, at home.
