“According to the studies carried out by Águas de Portugal and which will be delivered for the environmental impact assessment, the place where we are going to propose the installation of the desalination plant is the municipality of Albufeira”, said the minister in parliament.
Duarte Cordeiro, who was speaking at a debate on water requested by the PSD, also revealed that the water efficiency plan for the Alentejo is ready and will be presented shortly.
This month, said Duarte Cordeiro, the Government will award the contract for the connection of the Alqueva to the Monte da Rocha reservoir, "with a view to guaranteeing the necessary volume of water for two years for public supply" in the reservoir.
The minister took stock of the measures taken against the drought and the optimisation of the water resource, after the Government was accused by the PSD, by deputy Bruno Coimbra, of just “waiting for it to rain”.
The deputy spoke of water losses of 30%, the “almost non-existent use of treated water”, activities that are conditioned by the lack of water, and accused the executive of not presenting measures for “a robust policy” for water.

Well I still don't understand why they did wait all this years to do this ? This should been done long time ago . Lets hope that will not be another obras de Santa Engrácia .

Desalination plants are expensive. Desal-ing water to irrigate ex-pats condo landscape is not a smart enterprise. Start by teaching conservation, requiring drought tolerant landscape, remind people to turn the water off while brushing teeth and washing dishes. The problem can be maintained through proper stewardship of natural resources, and you won't need to desalinate water.

What is missing here is the discussion about the economics.
Domestic water supply is charged (depending on the camara) at around 28 cents per ton, rising up to a few euros if usage is high.
Agriculture is charged at 5 cents per cube for supplied water, or just the cost of pumping for farms with their own bore wells. When that cost rises just a little bit, local agriculture grinds to a halt because the produce is worth less than the water used to grow it.
Desalinated water comes in at around 1 euro per cube at the cheapest.
With 75% of water usage in the agricultural sector, how do we reconcile 1 euro water production with 5 cent agriculture use?
No one wants to stop food production; on the other hand, it's by far the largest use of water supplies, even now.
And they only pay 5 cents per ton.

Teach people???? These people still don't understand that drinking and driving do not match. These people still do not respect street signs - e.g. where dogs are not allowed to poo and people still leave their dog waste all over the place. The desalination plant may turn out to be another new airport plan and take over 50 years.

Construction in Portugal never even starts, the nation is impotent on building anything, particularly from Centro down to the Algarve. Very ineffective nation.

We have a solution to create energy and desalinate at the same time.
For the vineyard I am buying I would like to see a location for our concept so we can provide other vineyards and agriculture too.
