Sales of new cars are up 18.3% from the same time last year. 8,131 registrations in August compared to 8,154 in August of previous year, a tiny decrease, but 112,729 new passenger cars have been registered so far this year, up from 95,269 by the end of August 2022.

Twenty-two hundred and eighteen new electric vehicles (EVs) had been registered as of the end of August, making up 18% of new automobile sales. Sales of EVs have increased by 60% since last year.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) account for 8.3% of sales in addition, with standard hybrids making up 19%.

Diesel engines are still the second most popular option after regular petrol engines, accounting for 22.3% of sales.

With 2,756 registrations, the Volkswagen ID.4 leads the EV market in Ireland. It is followed by the Tesla Model Y (1,715), the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (1,226), and the Skoda Enyaq (1,152).

With 15,609 registrations, Toyota has maintained its position as the top-selling new car brand overall, surpassing Volkswagen (12,527), Hyundai (11,426), and Skoda (9,559). With 5,141 sales, the Hyundai Tucson outsells the Kia Sportage and Toyota Corolla, which all have 3,371 and 2,973 respectively.
