The 14-year-old from Santa Cruz, Madeira, completed the long program with a total of 236.38 points.
“I feel very happy and fulfilled and that all the work was valued and rewarded. I feel like I managed to exceed expectations and honour my country and the people who believe in and love me", said the teen, quoted in a statement from the Portuguese Skating Federation (FPP).
“This achievement means a lot: many hours of training and giving up many things. It also means confidence, not only my confidence in myself, but also the confidence of the selectors, the Federation, my mother and my coach."
This was the first gold medal ever won by Portugal in free skating. Madalena Costa, it should be noted, already became European champion on September 10th.
Portuguese skater Catarina Craveiro, European champion this year, finished in fourth place with 149.85 points.
