According to the online travel agency, surfing is one of the main motivations for travel and, last year, searches for destinations for surfing by beginners grew by 175%.
However, when choosing a destination, surfers look for certain conditions, which led weloveholidays to carry out this study, which sought to analyse several factors that contribute to making destinations ideal for surfing.
The number of existing beaches and Blue Flag beaches are two of the main factors that contribute to choosing a destination for surfing, as well as the average wind speed, average water temperature and number of hours of sunshine.
Based on these factors, weloveholidays concluded that, in Europe, the best surfing destination for beginners is the Canary Islands, in Spain, with a score of 6.12 points, followed by the island of Crete, in Greece, with 6.05 points, as well as Sardinia, in Italy, which obtained a score of 6.00 points.
The Algarve comes in 13th place, with a score of 4.35 points, standing out for the number of hours of sunshine, with 3,051 hours of sunshine per year, being the European destination in this ranking that presents the highest value in this indicator.
The average water temperature in the Algarve reaches 20.5 °C and the wind speed is low, reaching 3.97 m/s, which, says weloveholidays, results “in more stable waves, ideal for good surfing, especially for beginners.”
