Volunteering always provides valuable insights into both the immense need within our community and the power of collective effort in addressing such challenges. We witnessed firsthand the vulnerable individuals and families who rely on these services during the holiday season.

It was a stark reminder of how social inequalities persist. The sight of individuals queuing up for a hot meal and their expressions of gratitude emphasised the impact that this charitable initiative has on those who may otherwise go hungry or feel forgotten during this joyous time.

Moreover, working alongside dedicated staff and fellow volunteers, especially our Portugal News colleagues as well as the students and parents of Nobel British International School Lagoa, showcased the remarkable compassion and determination necessary to conduct such an event successfully. 15 students from the Nobel School volunteered for a whole year at the Soup Kitchen and were awarded Certificates for their diligence and hard work.

Overall, this experience reinforced my belief in the importance of giving back to society, especially during times when many are left out of celebrations due to circumstances beyond their control.

It was remarkable to witness the joy and gratitude on the faces of those who received the meal and gift bags, and the experience deepened my appreciation for the power of food to nourish not only our bodies but also our spirits.

This annual tradition has become an integral part of my professional journey, reinforcing my commitment to giving back and serving those less fortunate than myself.

Joy Borgan, the Director of the Portimão Soup Kitchen, said that she was very grateful to everyone who helped to cook, prepare sandwiches, prepare gift bags, and serve at the door. It was a great day and we served over 400 meals and brought smiles to a lot of faces, so it was very worthwhile.
