Oral health is very important. Many people don't know this, but maintaining good oral hygiene is not just a matter for dental diseases and problems.

Did you know that poor hygiene can increase the number of bacteria and other microorganisms, which can then be transported through the bloodstream and compromise the immune system?

It's true! However, there are several oral diseases that can arise from poor oral hygiene, including the famous cavities, halitosis (bad breath), diseases affecting the gums, such as gingivitis, periodontitis (the most serious form of gingivitis) and receding gums.

The problem is that these diseases can progress and lead to deterioration of the bone, which causes total tooth loss and can also be responsible for other causes.

Do you have diabetes? You need to be even more careful, as the disease makes it easier to get mouth infections.

Consequently, poor oral hygiene can lead to heart and lung problems! When gingivitis is left untreated and worsens into periodontitis, the bacteria can reach the heart valves via the bloodstream. Once there, it begins to impair blood circulation and heart function.

As well as being a risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, the bacteria can also cause endocarditis, an inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and heart valves that can be fatal depending on the condition. Pre-existing lung diseases can worsen as a reaction to the bacteria.

In pregnancy, good oral health is extremely important, as several problems have been identified for mother and baby related to periodontitis: low birth weight, premature birth and even pre-eclampsia.

Think about it, don't leave your oral health behind, value it (https://colombosilva.pt/).
