According to company data sent to Lusa, the carrier registered 79,070,564 validations in 2023, an increase of 21.30% compared to the 65.2 million (exactly 65,185,811) validations registered in 2022.
Last year's numbers are still above the previous record for passengers transported, recorded in 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic), in which the company had registered 71.3 million passengers.
An official company source told Lusa that 2023 "definitively marks Metro do Porto's position as the largest public transport operator in the Porto Metropolitan Area and one of the largest in the country".
Lusa has already requested figures on passengers transported in 2023 from the Sociedade de Transportes Coletivos do Porto (STCP), the other major operator in the region, and is awaiting a response.
By stations, the nine most frequented stations, the most used is Trindade (18.9%), followed by Campanhã (5.0% ), Casa da Música (4.9%), São Bento (4.5%), Bolhão (3.6%), João de Deus (3.4%), Santo Ovídio (3.3%), Campo 24 de Agosto (3.0%) and Sete Bicas (2.9%).
"Of particular note is the rise of Campanhã station from fourth to second place in this ranking and of Bolhão station from seventh to fifth position", highlights an official source from Metro do Porto.
Metro do Porto currently has six lines in operation, awaiting the inauguration of the extension of the Yellow Line (D) between Santo Ovídio and Vila d'Este (Vila Nova de Gaia), and the completion of works on the Pink Line (G ), between São Bento and Casa da Música (Porto) and the metrobus line between Casa da Música and Praça do Império.
