The PSP, which operates the free European emergency number in Portugal, stated that 112 received a total of 6.95 million calls in 2023, of which 4.93 million were answered.

The remainder of calls received which went unanswered, corresponds to calls abandoned by the 112 callers before receiving a response by an operator or to accidental rings to the number.

Of the contacts made, 1.39 million calls were registered as emergencies and 1.26 million as false calls, while 142.4 thousand calls were considered non-occurrences.

The majority (around 86 percent) of calls registered as emergencies aimed to request help in cases of life-threatening illness or immediate need for medical assistance, following alerts for crimes, road accidents and fires.
