According to the EarthSky website, one of the big differences between this meteor shower and other similar phenomena is the fact that the Geminids do not originate from a comet but instead an asteroid.

The asteroid in question is 3200 Phaethon, a celestial body discovered in October 1983 and about which we hope to learn more in the coming years. That's because a small Japanese probe - called DESTINY+ - will visit 3200 Phaethon in 2030 with the aim of studying it in more detail. The mission is scheduled to take off in 2028.
