The intervention follows a technical assessment that identified a number of trees in poor health and with severe structural anomalies, posing a considerable risk to the safety of people, animals, and property, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
According to the municipality, the decision involves both the removal of hazardous trees and the planting of new species better suited to the area’s urban environment. In total, 10 trees are scheduled to be cut down.
The City Council emphasised that this action is necessary to maintain public safety and ensure the resilience of green spaces across the city. “The decision to remove and replace trees is never taken lightly”, the municipality stated, “but the current condition of some specimens makes intervention unavoidable.”
The new trees to be planted will be carefully selected not only for their aesthetic and ecological value but also for their structural soundness and adaptability to the local climate. The initiative is part of a broader commitment by the municipality to manage urban green spaces responsibly while preserving the city’s natural heritage.
This intervention aims to maintain a safe, pleasant, and sustainable environment for residents and visitors alike, ensuring that Leiria’s green spaces continue to thrive and enhance the quality of urban life.
