The road transport system will serve 19 municipalities and connect neighbouring regions. It is expected to operate with 240 buses, 77% of which are brand new, and they will all be equipped with free internet, air conditioning, information panels and georeferencing technology.

The CEO of Busway Coimbra, the company that will be providing this service, has said that there will be about 2,000 daily schedules and roughly 300 employees, with the expectation of hiring 20 drivers, in addition to the transfer of those who are employed in the current transport system.

The service will have real-time information on bus circulation, with users being able to use a single ticket in the future, which is also in the development process to be used in the bus system. The president of Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Coimbra (CIMRC) has stated that the ticket system is predicted to begin at the same time as the inauguration of the new transport system, but it could be delayed due to constraints in the process.

The executive secretary of CIMRC has said that the system will ensure intermunicipal, municipal and interstate lines, in a heterogeneous territory, going from the mountains to the sea.

For the president of CIMRC, this intermunicipal road transport system, which will be called SIT, will materialise Coimbra’s ambition to be a metropolitan city.
