Portugal's third consecutive appearance in the final stages of the European Championship got off to a rocky start with a 5-0 defeat to Spain in Bern. However, Francisco Neto’s side still has a chance to recover in their second Group B match in Geneva and stay in the race for a quarterfinal spot. A loss to Italy—who began the tournament with a 1-0 win over Belgium—could see Portugal eliminated from the knockout stage, especially if Spain manages at least a draw against Belgium.
After losing to the world champions as a substitute, FC Barcelona midfielder Kika Nazareth, who has not played since 12 March due to a ruptured internal lateral ligament in her left ankle, could be an option, but it is unlikely that she will start.
Portugal and Italy will face each other on Monday in Geneva, starting at 9pm local time (8pm in Lisbon), in a second-round match of Group B, which will be coached by Croatian Ivana Martincic. Earlier, starting at 6pm local time (5pm in Lisbon) in Thun, Spain and Belgium will face off in the other group game. In the table, the Spanish team leads with three points, the same as the Italians, in second place, while the Belgians are in third and the Portuguese are in fourth, both with zero points.
