The intervention, the APA stated in a statement, has a 60-day completion period and involves replenishing the beach with a total volume of 1,000,000 cubic meters, with an estimated investment of 8.6 million euros.

The project is financed by European funds—the Thematic Program for Climate Action and Sustainability (PACS)—and by investment from the Port of Lisbon Administration, S.A.

In February, the Government approved a resolution in the Council of Ministers that authorized expenditures for the artificial beach nourishment of the Costa da Caparica beaches, in the district of Setúbal, totalling 11 million euros.

In early January, the government, through the Ministry of the Environment, announced that it would invest €20.2 million in priority coastal protection projects, specifically to stabilize cliffs, protect coastal infrastructure, and reinforce the most vulnerable beaches.

In a statement released in February, the ministry highlighted that €13.9 million will be supported by the Cohesion/Sustainability Fund 2030, which approved funding for 12 applications for coastal protection and defense projects.

The measures "combine advanced engineering with nature-based solutions, promoting climate adaptation and sustainable coastal management."

One of the interventions is the artificial sand replenishment of the beaches of Costa da Caparica and S. João da Caparica, which aims to strengthen "coastal resilience in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, as well as the dredging of the Albufeira [Sesimbra] lagoon, which has already begun, improving water circulation, restoring natural systems, and minimizing risks on Praia da Califórnia and Portinho da Arrábida."

In July 2024, the Minister of the Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, admitted that sand replenishment of the beaches of Caparica is essential to preserving this natural heritage and acknowledged that it is a long and ongoing process that must be maintained.

On that occasion, the Mayor of Almada, Inês de Medeiros (PS), called on the government to ensure that these replenishments are completed by 2025.
