In the statement, the INE notes that "since the beginning of 2025, there have been historical monthly highs in the number of passengers handled at national airports, with the exception of February," and July again showed a positive trend.
INE data indicates that, in July, national airports recorded an "average daily disembarkation of 126,000 passengers," a figure higher than that recorded in July 2024 (119,800) and representing a 5.2% increase.
Among disembarked passengers, 82.2% were international traffic, totalling 3.2 million passengers, representing a 5.4% increase compared to July 2024. Of these passengers, 68.6% came from the European continent, representing a 5.1% increase compared to the same month last year.
The Americas, adds the INE, were the second main origin of passengers arriving at domestic airports in July, accounting for 9.3% of the total number of disembarked passengers, representing an 8.0% increase.
Of the passengers departing at domestic airports, 80.9% were international passengers, totalling approximately three million passengers and representing a 5.3% increase. Of these, 65.6% had airports in Europe as their main destination, representing a 5.2% increase compared to July 2024.
Similar to disembarked passengers, among those departing at domestic airports, the second main destination was airports in the Americas, totalling 10.5%, representing a 5.7% increase.
The data released by the INE also includes accumulated data since January, showing that, in this period, passenger traffic at national airports grew 4.9%, above the 4.7% increase recorded in the same period in 2024.
Lisbon airport
By airports, Lisbon stood out, having handled 20.6 million passengers since the beginning of the year, corresponding to 49.1% of the total number of passengers passing through national airports since January.
Lisbon Airport has seen a 3% increase in total passengers handled through July, followed by Faro Airport, which recorded a 7.3% increase in passenger traffic to approximately six million passengers, representing 14.2% of the total. Porto Airport, meanwhile, handled 22.8% of the total passengers handled, totalling 9.6 million, and grew by 5.5%.
Between January and July 2025, according to the INE, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for flights, registering increases in the number of disembarked passengers (+2.9%) and embarked passengers (+2.6%) compared to the same period in 2024.
Conversely, the INE statement also states, France registered decreases in the number of disembarked passengers (-1.5%) and embarked passengers (-1.3%), ranking 2nd in this ranking, followed by Spain, Germany, and Italy, which occupied 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions, respectively, as the main countries of origin and destination for passengers.
