This is a special issue with a limited edition of 500,000 copies, approved by Ordinance No. 201/2025/1, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on April 23.
According to the Banco de Portugal, these coins will be available through credit institutions, central bank treasuries, and Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda stores.
On the national side of the coin, in the centre, appears a representation of planet Earth, surrounded by the legend "Sustainable Development."
On the upper left edge, a branch composed of 17 sets of leaves arranged in a triangle stands out, evoking the symbol of the recycling cycle and referring to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
In the lower right quadrant are the inscription "Portugal," the national coat of arms, the date "2025," the reference to the "Casa da Moeda," and the name of the designer.

Encircling the entire set are the 12 stars of the European Union, arranged in a circular fashion, as on all euro coins. The common side maintains the European design used in circulation in all eurozone countries.
The Banco de Portugal explained that the issuance limit is 500,000 coins, all with a normal finish. During the first 15 days after the launch, each person may purchase up to ten coins per day. The coins will only be available over the counter; reservations or mailings are not possible.
According to the same source, sales to the public will be made exclusively at the Banco de Portugal treasury offices, which are open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Credit institutions and National Press – Casa da Moeda stores will also distribute the coins, allowing for wider access.
As with other €2 commemorative issues, this coin is legal tender throughout the eurozone. This means it can be used for everyday payments, although many prefer to keep it as a collector's item.

Virtue signalling nonsense. A complete waste of time, money and resources.
