After the autonomous electric car of Formula Student and the solar boat of FAST, it is now the turn of MotoStudent FEUP to unveil its first electric competition motorcycle, in a rollout that precedes the world premiere at MotoStudent 2025, in Aragon, Spain.
The project, which was born two years ago, involves 42 students from different courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management by bringing together the best of the institution's multidisciplinary talent. The presentation is scheduled for September 25 and represents more than the culmination of months of work: it is FEUP's official entry into one of the most demanding university competitions in the mobility sector.
The bike incorporates a high-voltage battery designed specifically for competition, made up of more than 300 lithium-ion cells, with 114 volts and 5.7 kWh capacity. To this is added electronics developed from scratch by the students, ensuring safety and reliability, and also an innovative dashboard that provides real-time data to the pilot. These are solutions comparable to what is done in world-renowned universities, but with a 100% Portuguese signature.
MotoStudent, which this year breaks participation records, will feature more than 85 teams from 19 countries, including leading institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, or the University of Twente, in the Netherlands. In total, there are five tons of logistical material distributed by the organization and almost 100 thousand kilometers traveled to take the official kits to teams around the world. The race is a true global innovation laboratory, where electric motors, 100% renewable fuels and sustainable racing systems are tested.
By being present on this stage, FEUP not only puts its students side by side with some of the most prestigious universities on the planet but also reinforces Porto's role as a hub of talent in engineering and innovation. It is further proof that Portugal, when it invests in its academy, can compete with the best and contribute to the future of sustainable mobility.
From October 15th to 19th, at MotorLand Aragon, the electric motorcycle "made in Porto" will accelerate for the first time on a circuit that usually hosts MotoGP. More than a race, it will be the moment to show the world the ingenuity, creativity, and ambition of a generation of Portuguese engineers.
