The median cost of renting a home was 16.9 euros per square meter (euros/m2) at the end of September, according to the idealista price index.

Rental prices rose in all major cities analysed. The largest annual changes in rental income were recorded in Viana do Castelo (23.8%), Bragança (19.8%), Viseu (16.5%), Santarém (12.4%), Leiria (11.9%), Castelo Branco (11.2%), and Coimbra (11%). Next came Funchal (8.1%), Setúbal (8%), Braga (6%), Évora (5.1%), Porto (4.2%), Aveiro (3.4%), and Lisbon (1.8%).

Most expensive

Lisbon remains the most expensive city to rent a home, at €22.5 per square meter. Porto (€18.1 per square meter) and Funchal (€15.4 per square meter) ranked second and third, respectively.

The list of major cities with the highest housing rents continues with Setúbal (€13/m2), Coimbra (€12.6/m2), Évora (€11.8/m2), Aveiro (€11.7/m2), Braga (€9.9/m2), Viana do Castelo (€9.6/m2), Santarém (€9.4/m2), and Leiria (€9.2/m2).

The most affordable cities for renting a home are Bragança (€7.1/m2), Castelo Branco (€7.3/m2), and Viseu (€7.9/m2).
