The Impresa group revealed that it was in negotiations with the Italian group MediaForEurope (MFE), which is controlled by Silvio Berlusconi, to purchase a stake in the Portuguese media group, founded by Francisco Pinto Balsemão, a former Portuguese Prime Minister.

The information was initially revealed by the Italian press and later confirmed by the Portuguese company, after the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) suspended its shares.

The Impresa group revealed to the CMVM that "according to information provided by its majority shareholder, within the scope of the negotiations made public with the MFE group, the possibility of the latter acquiring a significant stake (direct or indirect) for controlling purposes in Impresa has not been ruled out, reiterating that, at this date, there is no binding agreement to this effect."

The Italian press reports that the MFE group is negotiating the possibility of acquiring the entire Impresa group or simply acquiring control of the eight SIC television channels and the streaming platform Opto.

The Impresa group has been experiencing financial problems, and the transaction would result in a quick resolution to these issues, which have been dragging on for years. The sale of part of the Impresa group would make the Balsemão family, the company's founders, the minority shareholder.

Euronews reports that the company posted a loss of €66.2 million in 2024 and that, in the first half of 2025, it had already posted losses of €5.1 million. The losses for 2025 are 27.1% higher than those recorded in the same period last year. The group's revenue also decreased by 0.8%, and net debt has grown in recent years, rising from €107.2 million in 2022 to €148.2 million in the first half of 2025.

The Impresa group's strategies to mitigate financial difficulties included attempting to sell its building in Oeiras to BPI for €37 million, but the sale fell through. However, a similar transaction was completed in 2018, when the group's headquarters were sold to Novobanco for €24.2 million.

The MFE Group aims to be an "aggregator for major European commercial broadcasters," having already acquired outlets not only in Italy, but also in Spain and, more recently, in Germany.

Francisco Pinto Balsemão, founder of Impresa, which launched the SIC channel on October 6, 1992, never wanted to sell majority shares in the group; however, financial problems may have led to this reality.
