"Tourism of Portugal made the decision, together with the State Secretariat for Tourism, to open an office here in Buenos Aires precisely to be able to work closely with tourism operations, but also with end consumers. This office will be part of our network of tourism teams abroad," Lídia Monteiro, director of the Board of Directors of Turismo de Portugal, told Lusa.

The decision was announced at the end of the Latin American International Tourism Fair (FIT), which ran from September 27th to 30th in Buenos Aires. Portugal was Argentina's guest of honour, providing an opportunity for promotion and visibility in a previously unexplored market.

The office will operate within the Portuguese Embassy in Buenos Aires and will open in 2026, with no date yet set. Currently, Turismo de Portugal has a presence in 25 countries, making Argentina its 26th.

"This is excellent news for us because it reinforces our work promoting Portuguese tourism. We will have someone completely dedicated solely to promoting Portugal. This will open doors that will be very important for our work," Gonçalo Teles Gomes, the Portuguese ambassador to Argentina, explained to Lusa.

In November, representatives of Turismo de Portugal will participate in the annual convention of the Buenos Aires Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, a move that confirms Argentine tour operators' interest in Portugal as a new destination.

More than 800 members will be presented with Portugal, joint activities, and training sessions for travel agents about the destination.

"We will also work closely with travel agents and tour operators to educate them about Portugal. These training sessions are very important because they allow travel agents to learn about our offerings and create products, charting their own itineraries in Portugal, to share with their Argentine clients," said Lídia Monteiro.

This initiative will have a second and more important phase when two missions of tour operators and travel agencies from Argentina will travel to Portugal to explore the itineraries in the field.

The visits will be scheduled for January, immediately after the Madrid International Tourism Fair (FITUR), which will take place from January 21st to 26th, 2026. Those interested in Portugal will be able to take advantage of their presence at FITUR to visit the new destination.

"We will organize two visits by Argentine operators to Portugal at the beginning of the year. One with the Buenos Aires Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, and another with the Argentine Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, at the national level. These delegations will conduct a road show through Portugal. They will enter through the North and exit through the South, exploring our country. They will learn about our tourism offerings and establish contacts with Portuguese companies for partnerships," noted Lídia Monteiro.
