Despite the rise in exports, imports are still penalising the economy's external balance, according to ECO.

In total, tourism and travel exports rose by €180.15 million when compared to the figures recorded in August 2025, according to data revealed by the Bank of Portugal and quoted by ECO.

Thus, the record figure of €4.17 billion in August 20244 was surpassed in August 2025, which ultimately contributed to a positive surplus in the balance of services.

On the other hand, the Portuguese also spent more on travelling and tourism abroad. The data shows that imports rose from €878.8 million in August 2024 to €883.8 million in August this year. This is the second-highest figure since the series began in 1996.
