The celebrations will be done through various initiatives that combine tradition and “institutional, cultural, sport and recreational” events, as mentioned in a press release by the City Hall.

The celebrations begin at 9.30 am with the “Flag Raising Ceremony in Gil Eanes Square, with the participation of the 1st of May Philharmonic Society, the Lagos Choral Group and the traditional pigeon release promoted by the Odiáxere Pigeon Club.”

An hour later, Mass in honour of São Gonçalo will take place in the Church of Santa Maria, “followed by a procession through the streets of the historic centre of Lagos, starting at 11.30am, keeping alive one of the city’s most emblematic religious traditions.”

“In the afternoon, at 3pm, the Solemn Session will take place at the Lagos Cultural Centre, a moment of institutional recognition that will include official speeches.”

In the evening, a musical show will take place in Praça do Infante at 9.30 pm, with the participation of Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio, “in partnership with the iconic rock band IRIS, in an unprecedented concert that promises to involve the public in an atmosphere of celebration and sharing.” The event will be free to attend.

The celebrations begin on 25 and 26 October, “with various cultural and sporting activities.”
