In a statement, Porto Editora announced that the ten words to be voted on are "agent (AI)," "blackout," "elections," "elevator," "flotilla," "fires," "immigration," "moderate," "perception," and "task worker."

In Portuguese the words are: “agente (IA)”, “apagão”, “eleições”, “elevador”, “flotilha”, “fogos”, “imigração”, “moderado”, “perceção” e “tarefeiro”.

Voting will be possible until the end of November via the website www.palavradoano.pt.

“More than a choice, the Word of the Year is a mirror of our collective memory. The list of finalist words reflects the themes and events that marked the year and was compiled based on more than 6,500 suggestions sent by the Portuguese people, the most searched words in the Infopédia Portuguese language dictionary, and the continuous work of observing the language done by Porto Editora, namely in the media and social networks,” reads the statement released by that publishing group.

Last year, when it was the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, the most voted word was “freedom”.

In previous editions, the chosen words were "freedom" (2024), "teacher" (2023), "war" (2022), "vaccine" (2021), "longing" (2020), "domestic violence" (2019), "nurse" (2018), "fires" (2017), "contraption" (2016), "refugee" (2015), "corruption" (2014), "firefighter" (2013), "entangled" (2012), "austerity" (2011), "vuvuzela" (2010) and "to scrutinize" (2009).
