The Sierra Canyon American International School (SCAISchool Portugal) will bring to the country the educational model of the renowned Sierra Canyon School of Los Angeles, a leading American institution distinguished by its pedagogical innovation and excellence in academic and sporting results.
This will be the first Sierra Canyon School international school in Europe, a milestone that reflects the confidence in the educational quality and cosmopolitan environment that Portugal offers. The partnership between the two institutions ensures that the future SCAISchool Portugal will directly benefit from the experience, know-how, and pedagogical practices of a leading school in the United States, promoting demanding, humanized, and future-oriented education.
The opening is scheduled for September 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the international educational landscape in Portugal. The new school will be located in Alcochete, on a 17-hectare plot of land, next to the future Lisbon South Airport and the new bridge over the Tagus River. The strategic location combines tranquillity, nature, and accessibility, offering families an ideal setting for a quality international education, just minutes from Lisbon.
“The choice of Alcochete reflects our vision of creating an integrated school in a growing area, simultaneously accessible from Lisbon, with space to develop a true international campus. We want to offer families an excellent alternative in a safe, sustainable environment with a strong connection to nature,” explains Teresa Costa Monteiro, responsible for the project's implementation in Portugal.
“The Sierra Canyon American International School is an educational project that combines the experience of the Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles with an innovative, trilingual pedagogical model focused on the holistic development of each student – a school designed for the future.”
SCAISchool proposes an educational approach based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, recognized worldwide for its academic excellence and focus on the holistic development of the student. The school will be trilingual, with English as the primary language of instruction, Portuguese as a language of cultural integration, and French as a second foreign language, promoting linguistic proficiency and global awareness from an early age.
The campus is developed by Broadway Malyan, a global studio with extensive experience in innovative educational environments, in collaboration with the Portuguese architect Tiago Silva Dias and his team, Silva Dias Arquitectos, recognized for the harmonious integration between architecture, community, and landscape. The project combines contemporary design and sustainability, creating a learning ecosystem where every space, from the classroom to the outdoors, is designed to stimulate students' curiosity, collaboration, and well-being.
