"Despite slight decreases compared to the same month last year (-1.7% in guests and -2.2% in overnight stays), mainly explained by the reduction in international demand, the domestic market maintained its growth trajectory, sustaining tourist activity at the end of the high season," according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), says the Algarve Tourism Region.
Total earnings reached €232.3 million, representing a year-on-year growth of 4.4%, confirming the resilience of the destination and its decisive weight in national tourism.
The average length of stay was 3.98 nights, the second highest in the country, just after Madeira. The ADR (average revenue per occupied room) reached €151.90 (+5.9%), also the second highest value among the regions, surpassed only by Greater Lisbon, while the room occupancy rate stood at 72.8% (-1.3 p.p.).
According to Algarve Tourism, the variations observed in September "did not have a significant impact on the results of the summer quarter (July to September), whose overall balance remained positive in most indicators compared to the same period of 2024".
In the accumulated quarter, the number of guests increased by +1.7%, with growth among both residents (+3.3%) and non-residents (+1.0%). Overnight stays registered an increase of +0.4%, driven by the domestic market (+3.0%), which compensated for the slight decrease in foreign visitors (-0.7%).
The average length of stay was 4.17 nights (-1.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year), and the room occupancy rate was 75.8% (-0.8 percentage points). Despite these adjustments, the quarter showed a very positive evolution in revenues, which grew by +6.6%, accompanied by a significant increase of +7.1% in ADR, consolidating the good economic performance of the destination at the peak of the high season.
"The Portuguese continue to choose the Algarve as their main summer holiday destination, and this is a source of great satisfaction," emphasizes André Gomes, president of Algarve Tourism.
"In a more challenging international context, domestic tourism has once again asserted itself as an essential pillar of the sector, guaranteeing positive results and contributing decisively to the good performance of the region and to the balance of activity throughout the quarter," he concluded.
