"With this new operation, the Azores will be even more connected to Europe, reinforcing the balanced and sustainable growth of tourism in the archipelago, in line with the principles of environmental preservation and enhancement of the destination's natural and cultural heritage," Visit Azores said in a statement sent to Lusa news agency.
According to the statement, Austrian Airlines "will inaugurate a new direct route between Vienna and Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, Azores, starting June 30, 2026, with operations scheduled until September 8, 2026."
Flights will operate once a week, connecting Ponta Delgada and the Azorean island of São Miguel “to the heart of Europe.”
The Austrian Airlines initiative “results from the company’s commitment to diversifying its offerings and confirms the growing international interest in the Azores,” it adds.
“This new connection is a significant milestone in connectivity between Austria and the Azores, revealing that we are an increasingly sought-after destination in this market, with more than 12,000 guests in 2024, mainly tourists with primary motivations for nature destinations and sustainable experiences,” it reads.
The president of the Visit Azores Association, Luís Capdeville, quoted in the statement, considers that “the arrival of Austrian Airlines in the Azores is more than a new route; it is an invitation to discovery.”
“We are opening doors for travellers who value authenticity, nature, and sustainability. This connection strengthens our mission to position the Azores as a benchmark destination in Europe,” concluded the executive.
