In a warning to the population, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) warned that floods and landslides may occur, with the worsening weather conditions in mainland Portugal due to the passage of Storm Claudia.
Mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago will be under weather warnings starting today and at least until the end of Thursday.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the territory, with wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour, which in the highlands may reach 110 kilometers per hour.
Rough seas, with waves of four to four and a half meters, are also among the IPMA's forecasts, highlighted by Civil Protection.
ANEPC draws attention to the possibility of flooding in urban areas, flooding exacerbated by overflowing rivers and streams and landslides, as well as contamination of drinking water sources by debris resulting from rural fires.
Recommendations include clearing drainage systems, defensive driving on slippery surfaces, and removing animals and equipment from easily flooded areas.
Activities at sea and walks along the beach are also discouraged.
