The socialist mayor was re-elected, for the second consecutive time, to the position he has held since 2019, with 13 votes in favour and two abstentions, at the meeting of the intermunicipal council of the regional body, the first after the inauguration of the mayors elected on October 12.

The mayors of Silves, Luísa Conduto (CDU), and Tavira, Ana Paula Martins (PS), were elected vice-presidents of AMAL, AMAL announced in a statement.

António Miguel Pina, quoted in the document, states that for the new 2025-2029 term, he "intends to continue the spirit that has guided and presided over" AMAL, affirming a "non-partisan vision for the Algarve."

The priority "will always be to defend the interests of the region, with one voice [...], especially during the particularly difficult times that the south of the country has been experiencing," he emphasises.

According to the mayor, "the priorities and demands of the organization will continue to be in the areas of Mobility and Transport, Water Efficiency, Waste Collection, Community Fund Management, Health, and Education."

António Miguel Pina, former mayor of Olhão, won the elections for mayor of Faro last October, regaining control of the Algarve capital's city council for the Socialist Party (PS) after 16 years of PSD (Social Democratic Party) dominance.

The mayor was prevented from running again for mayor of Olhão, a position he had held since 2013, due to term limits.
