In a video sent to The Portugal News (video credit: Eva Santos), it is possible to see the destruction in Lagoa, where trees have fallen on a road before arriving at the water park Slide & Splash.

According to CMTV, the Lagoa municipality was also affected by the strong winds, destroying the Parque de Campismo de Ferragudo.

According to the Lusa agency, the phenomenon caused damage to the Albufeira Campsite - causing the fatality, four minor injuries and one serious injury - and to a hotel unit, causing 19 injuries, one of which is in serious condition.

Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) said that the radar images indicate that the likelihood of a tornado is very high, also due to the damage, but that the situation is still to be assessed.

The situation occurred at around 11am and, according to meteorologist Paula Leitão, until 3pm the atmospheric conditions in the Algarve will remain favourable “for there to be more phenomena of this kind, although it doesn't mean that they will reach land.”

According to her, there is still "a lot of activity over the sea", and these phenomena happen occasionally and unexpectedly, so it's not possible to predict when and where they might occur.

Faro, Setúbal and Beja remain under an orange warning today, at least until 3pm, due to persistent rain, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, says the IPMA on its website.
