When you walk around the town, you will notice it's full of Marble decorations, benches, and even water fountains.
Igreja da Misericórdia
Located in the center of the Town, this church first appears documented in 1504, connected to the old royal hospital. It’s an example of the transition between Mannerism and Baroque in Portugal.
Palácio Ducal de Vila Viçosa
Former residence of the Dukes of Bragança, the last royal dynasty of the Portuguese monarchy. Its façade is decorated with marble and extends for 110 meters, a unique sight in Portugal. Dating back to 1501, it was closed after the republic was established in 1910 and was only reopened in the 40’s for the monument to be visited.
Igreja de São Bartolomeu
Construction started in 1636, at the request of D João IV. Its front is made from local marble, sourced from the quarries that surround the town, showing the deep connection to this material in the region. It also serves as a great example of the Baroque style in Portugal, being richly decorated with golden leaf ornaments.
Castelo de Vila Viçosa
Built in the XIV century, it overlooks the whole town, allowing you to enjoy the vast landscapes of Alentejo. It also contains the hunting museum, which contains a collection of 200 firearms that were used during the Portuguese colonial wars, and the archeological museum, which exhibits pieces from the Paleolithic to the 18th century.
Casa Florbela Espanca
In “Rua Florbela Espanca 59” you will find the house-museum dedicated to Florbela Espanca, a great Portuguese poet born in 1894. Here you will visit one of the houses Florbela Espanca lived in and learn more about her life and poetry. Florbela used to write about desire, sorrow and was one of the main female poetic voices in Portugal.
“Rostos na Cal” street art
Near Vila Viçosa, you will find a hidden gem along the road. With representations from artists like Vhils, Bordallo II, and Superlinox, this place is a must-stop if you like street art. It depicts the people of Alentejo, their struggles, and also giant snails, one of the many species that roam Alentejo’s grasslands.
