In May 2026, Delta Air Lines will open a new route between Porto and New York – JFK, in an operation with daily flights that Antonio Herrero, Director of Corporate Strategy for the American airline, hopes will run smoothly and that Porto will become a “very popular destination”.
“Porto is an incredible city. I've been there a few times and, therefore, I'm sure it will be a very popular destination”, according to a report by Publituris.
Despite not having data on Delta Air Lines' Portuguese routes, Antonio Herrero explained that "Portugal is currently one of the growing markets" in the carrier's network, which is why a third route between Portugal and the USA will be launched.
"We are very focused on international growth and Portugal is one of those markets. This will be the third route that Delta operates from the USA and we are eager to see how customers will receive it," added the Director of Corporate Strategy at Delta Air Lines.
Antonio Herrero believes that American tourists like Portugal because of the beauty and history of Portuguese cities, as well as the "Mediterranean vibe" that the country also offers, especially in the Algarve, which he considers to be a "beautiful destination" and located a few hours away from Lisbon.
More new flights
Later, during a short presentation, the head of Delta Air Lines further explained that, like Porto, the airline will also open new routes to Spain next spring, flying between Barcelona and Seattle with three flights per week, as well as between Madrid and Boston with daily connections.
All routes, Antonio Herrero explained, will begin as seasonal, and the airline will then evaluate their continuation into the winter "depending on the demand" recorded.
"Everything depends on demand. I think they will all start as seasonal and then, depending on demand, we will decide whether they continue or end after the summer," he said.
The flights between Porto and New York – JFK will be operated on a Boeing 767-300 aircraft, with four classes of cabins, specifically Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Delta Main.
