It is already incredibly challenging for those who are homeless without these extreme weather conditions, whether sleeping on the streets, in abandoned buildings, tents or makeshift shelters.

In the past two years, thanks to donations, 1325 sleeping bags have been delivered across the Algarve to frontline Associations, community groups and individuals to distribute to those experiencing homelessness across the whole region. For this winter, the campaign organiser, Eve Clifton, has partnered with a new registered non-profit organisation, AGAPE Homeless, whose initial commitment is to offering practical support, compassionate care and meaningful connection to those experiencing homelessness in the Portimão and Lagoa region.

Sally Ward, founder of AGAPE Homeless, said “our goal is to meet urgent needs while also connecting people with long-term solutions, however, when approached to get involved with the ‘Help the Homeless Winter Campaign’ we knew that it was a fantastic opportunity to connect with likeminded organisations and expand our support to those experiencing homelessness across the whole of the Algarve”. There remain over 800 ‘registered’ homeless in the Algarve, with many more that are not included in any official consensus. The target for this winter’s campaign is 500 sleeping bags. Once the target has been achieved, focus will be on providing other items desperately needed, including trainers (especially size 43), gloves, hygiene products and underwear.
