According to Águas do Algarve, water from the existing Quinta do Lago wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) will now be used to irrigate golf courses.
According to a statement from the company responsible for water supply in the Algarve, the project included the rehabilitation of the treated wastewater lagoon, with a capacity of 1,280 cubic meters, which serves to regulate fluctuations in inflow.
After disinfection, the water is pumped to the supply system from the pumping station, and a new pipeline was built to the delivery point at Pinheiros Altos, extending approximately 720 meters.
The project included the installation of five delivery points along the supply system: Pinheiros Altos, Quinta do Lago, Infraquinta, São Lourenço, and Bovis Lakeside.
The investment will allow the annual volume of water produced at the Quinta do Lago wastewater treatment plant to be reused to reach two million cubic meters.
The project involved an investment of €2.8 million and was supported by European funds through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), an investment program launched after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The contract signing ceremony was attended by, among others, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.
Águas do Algarve is the company holding the concession for the operation and management of the Algarve's multi-municipal water supply and sanitation system, which covers all 16 Algarve municipalities.
Quinta do Lago has three 18-hole golf courses: Quinta do Lago South, Quinta do Lago North, and Laranjal.
