The date did not go unnoticed by the municipality, which made sure to mark the anniversary. The woman, who has always been nicknamed "the girl," even by her husband, was born on December 22, 1912, two years before the founding of the municipality of São Brás de Alportel.
"She is a living testament to more than a century of history, having lived through profound social, cultural, and economic transformations in Portugal and the world. In the institution where she lives, she is affectionately called 'Queen,' captivating everyone with her serene spirit, her lucidity, and the memories full of wisdom that she shares," the municipality points out on its Facebook page.
In a video recorded in 2020, when the São Brás de Alportel City Hall held the municipality's Centenary Celebration, Maria da Conceição was challenged to leave a piece of advice for younger generations.
"Don't work too hard. Don't overexert yourself. Too much work ruins the body," she said.
On the occasion, the elderly woman also reminisced about her childhood, including the "church circle games" and the "threshing floor" games on Sunday afternoons.
The celebrations for Maria da Conceição's birthday took place this Monday at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Senior Citizens' Home, where she lives.
In addition to Maria da Conceição, Joaquim Varela, "another supercentenarian resident of the municipality," aged 110, was also celebrated.
For the city hall, Joaquim Varela, born on May 13, 1915, is "another remarkable example of longevity and resilience." The man "dedicated his entire life to working in the fields, to agriculture and raising cattle." At 25, he married Augusta, "with whom he built a large family, raising six children."
"In São Brás de Alportel live two of the four supercentenarians in the country. Together they total an impressive 223 years of history!", highlights the municipality.
