The event was organised by the Algarve Biomedical Center in collaboration with Algarunners Sports Association, MAR Shopping Algarve, the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA), and the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro – Núcleo Regional do Sul (LPCC-NRS). It brought the community together around a shared and meaningful goal: raising awareness of breast cancer and promoting prevention.

On 5 December, International Volunteer Day, a total of €1,411 was officially donated to the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA), and the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro – Núcleo Regional do Sul (LPCC-NRS).

This amount was raised through the registrations of more than 330 participants in the 4th Edition of Mama em Movimento – Solidarity Walk & Run, as well as through donations and the sale of regional and handcrafted products available on the day of the event.

Meet the Associations benefiting from the donations

Both beneficiary organisations play a crucial role in supporting cancer patients, promoting prevention and health literacy, and contributing to cancer-related initiatives in the Algarve. Their work complements clinical care by addressing the emotional, social and practical needs of patients and their families.

Associação Oncológica do Algarve

The Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life of cancer patients and their families throughout the Algarve region. Its work focuses on providing comprehensive, patient-centred support, complementing medical treatment with essential non-clinical care.

AOA offers psychological counselling, social support, and practical assistance, helping patients and caregivers navigate the emotional and logistical challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis. The association also develops community-based prevention and awareness initiatives, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging early detection through education and outreach activities.

By working closely with healthcare professionals and local institutions, AOA plays a vital role in reducing isolation, strengthening support networks and ensuring that patients receive holistic care beyond the hospital setting.

The public can also support AOA’s mission by making direct donations. Donations directly support patient care, awareness campaigns, and vital community initiatives across the Algarve.
