In a statement, the Government justifies the reinforcement of contingency measures at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon with “the worsening of constraints in the arrivals area” for non-European passengers coming from outside the Schengen area due to the evolution of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) of the European Union.
“Considering the need to implement and reinforce the contingency measures defined in September so that it is possible to achieve in the arrivals area the reduction in times already achieved in the departures area,” the Government has determined “the immediate suspension for three months of the application of the EES computer system, under European regulations” at Lisbon airport, says the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).
The MAI adds that there will also be an “immediate reinforcement” of GNR personnel with certified training in border control.
The ministry also indicates that “the capacity of electronic and physical equipment for controlling external borders will be increased by approximately 30% to the maximum supported by the current airport infrastructure.”

Just another example of poor Portuguese execution. I came through LIS on 28th and immigration officers were stopping passengers upstairs in the arrivals jetway because the passport control area was crammed. Thank goodness for my residence card or I would have been there all day
How much longer can Portugal continue to flout the basic requisites to be on the EU with impunity? Whether it be AIMA, Min of Justice for nationalisation, unfair car import taxes or passport control. It is time for the EU to apply the rules of membership, no more pointless fines, just stop the money given to Portugal until government complies. Maybe then we will see some improvement!

The news lead people to believe that border controls at Lisbon have been suspended which is not the case, just the electronic system.

Are those with resident cards allowed to use the EU citizens lane prior to this suspension? The problem still exists that Portugal is a popular destination and the Lisbon airport is overcapacity.
