Most new passenger cars use alternative energy sources. In December alone, sales rose 3% compared to the same month in 2024.
The number of new vehicles put into circulation reached 264,821 in the accumulated total for 2025, representing an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period in 2024, the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) announced.
From January to December, passenger vehicle registrations totalled 225,039 units, which translated into a growth of 7.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
In 2025, 69.7% of new passenger vehicles were powered by other types of energy, namely electric or hybrid. In particular, 23.2% of new passenger vehicles were electric.
Regarding heavy vehicles, in the twelve months of 2025, registrations in this category totalled 7,481 units, representing a market increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024.
In December, 24,978 motor vehicles were registered in Portugal, that is, 3% more than in the same month of 2024. Of these 24,978 vehicles, 20,879 were passenger cars, representing an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period last year.
The light vehicle market registered, in the last month of 2025, a negative evolution of 2.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 3,498 units registered.
Regarding the heavy vehicle market, which includes both passenger and freight vehicles, December 2025 saw a 24.4% increase compared to the same month in 2024, with 601 vehicles of this category sold.
