A cultural scream so loud, it can still be felt.
When the Orpheu magazine launched in 1915, Lisbon’s Art and Intellectual scene was truly put on notice. And that with massive ripples.
Working on it were then unknown artists Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro and Almada Negreiros.
All household names now. They all burst onto the cultural scene by creating a modern magazine that went against the grain of what was done at the time.
Even though only 2 issues were ever released, they were called insane by the public. Little did they know that the work of the Orpheu group still remains to shape the artistic scene of Portugal, more than 100 years later.
Mário de Sá-Carneiro, who tragically passed in 1916, was known as the tragic poet. His style went deep into human vulnerability.
Jose Almada Negreiro was the visual engine of the magazine. Living until 1970. He left behind a strong legacy of more than just art.
